Our Unity Programme

United in our mission

Workshops. Book clubs. Internal Sky events. The Unity Programme aims to create greater cultural awareness, amplify the voice of the Black community and support our allies to create a unified environment.

Developed internally at Sky by a small group of passionate volunteers, Unity’s commitment is to drive positive change across the business. Growing awareness through education and unifying our people to create equality.

Our Unity speakers
We’re incredibly grateful to all of our Unity speakers who have shared their time, knowledge and insight with us. Here’s a brief look at a few we’ve hosted so far.
David Olusoga – Africa & British history
David Olusoga –
Africa & The British Empire
The first Unity Programme event with historian, writer, broadcaster, presenter, and film-maker David Olusoga OBE. He discussed British history and in particular the UK’s links to Africa – interviewed by our own Laura Boyle. This session also covered topics including the media and whether 2020 will be the year everything changes.
Serlina Boyd, Lorraine O’Garro and Maja Antoine-Onikoyi – Children & Education
Serlina Boyd, Lorraine O’Garro and Maja Antoine-Onikoyi – Children & Education

In collaboration with Multiculture@Sky and Parents@Sky employee networks, this Unity Programme event focussed on Black representation in children’s literature and children’s education.

Hosted by Maria Palmer-Clarke from the Multiculture@Sky network, and Laura Butcher from the Parents@Sky network, they discussed what issues they see at the moment, and what they feel needs to change.

Afua Hirsch – Spotlight on Assimilation
Afua Hirsch –
Spotlight on Assimilation

This Unity event defined assimilation and provided an understanding of the general impact it has, the impact it can have on the entry and progression of Black colleagues within the workplace and within the legal profession, whilst hearing Afua Hirsch’s personal story.

Hosted by Ama Acheampong-Mensah and Priya Sahathevan, this session also looked to the future and focussed on how Sky can promote cultural change, encourage belonging, and create a more diverse and inclusive workplace.

“Our logo provides the energy and intention behind Unity. It’s one of the Adinkra symbols with the meaning of
‘Change your character’.

The star in the middle is reflective of a new start and the wheel around is a symbol of self-determination – towards a better version of self and the world.

We know that we all have to change to get to a better place where we can just be.”
