I am a qualified Solicitor and have been working for Sky for a little over two years now. I used to work in private practice with clients and also in another Telco before Sky. As an in-house consumer and regulatory lawyer in the Legal team at Sky Ireland, a key part of my role is ensuring compliance with both national and EU regulations. The role also involves supporting Sky on its many innovative product or service launches, identifying potential risks and helping get new ideas out to our customers. We spent a lot of our time working out solutions to issues that arise, no two days are the same! I review contracts, policies, proposals and agreements to ensure they meet our legal standards. It’s really important that Legal communicate any risks and issues that we may spot to our colleagues so they can operate with a clear view on things and know what our customer’s rights are.
Tell us about your role
What is it that you love most about your role?
What I love most about my role is the endless changing nature of Sky and the overall telecommunications and TV industry. Sky is always at the forefront of new ideas; and this keeps us on our toes. Every day in the office presents a new challenge and new opportunities to learn and stretch myself. I also get real satisfaction in seeing my work reach our consumers and as a customer myself it’s great to experience the end result in my home. Another big part of what we do in Legal is collaborating with the many teams across the company, and for me that aspect of the role is really satisfying, working closely on a project but also giving our legal advice in creative ways. I’m also really lucky to work with two amazing lawyers in Áine and Anna, we get to work on so many varying matters and help each other all the time.
Sky is always at the forefront of new ideas; and this keeps us on our toes.
Describe a project, or career highlight at Sky where you were able to make a difference?
One of my highlights at Sky was the launch of our new Mobile service. I played a role over the last two years in the ramping up of the project and ensuring the service met the regulatory requirements for such a service and that Sky protected consumer rights. It was a great feeling to see our efforts contribute to a successful launch in the market, and our proposition has gone down really well so far. Everyone on the mobile project team got to know each other really well as we worked our way through the creation of an entirely new part of the business.
At Sky we’re always challenging ourselves to deliver the next big thing. Describe what that’s like and why it’s exciting?
Being employed in a company that consistently strives to deliver the “next big thing” is definitely exciting but also challenging. That Sky culture of restlessness and continuous improvement makes for a fast-paced environment that keeps me focused on staying updated with the latest legal and regulatory developments. It took a while to get used to it for sure! I really think it’s a privilege to be part of project teams at the forefront of genuinely groundbreaking industry advancements in Ireland, what we work on daily is affecting thousands of customers and how they work and enjoy their entertainment.
How is Sky an inclusive place to work where you can be yourself?
I really believe that Sky is actively committed to being an inclusive workplace where everyone can be their best authentic selves. Our team always makes an effort to show up at key events and we look to promote a culture of respect and openness. I personally think that when we ensure all employees feel valued and supported that we can get the best out of each other. Not all companies are like this and it’s a really delicate balance to strike and Sky does it so well. Many people in the company attended an insightful run of seminars run by Pride Ireland last year and I think this kind of training goes a long way to enrich our company culture.
