I work in the Sky Studios building as part of Sky Post Production as an Edit Assistant Apprentice.
Tell us about your role, team, and work.
My role involves edit support for the workflow and content in post-production, media backup, ingest, and export. It is a technical-based role which involves dealing with client media and working to deadline-driven standards.
I would describe my team as the glue that holds all the different areas of post-production together, as we work closely with various departments. Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive since joining, willing to teach us skills and show us their work.
Even just two months into the apprenticeship, I feel I have learnt so much not just about my job but also about the industry. I have been involved in the team from day one. I sat in a team meeting on my very first day here and have been given the opportunity to actively learn and shadow others from the start of my apprenticeship.
The best way to learn is by 'doing', which is heavily reflected in my experience as an apprentice here at Sky Post Production. Alongside my role, I attend London Southbank University in two-week blocks as part of my apprenticeship. Here, I learn the technical knowledge to support my role, providing me with a greater understanding, which I have found extremely rewarding.
What do you love most about the role?
I feel my story is quite a unique one. I had always been set on a career in TV from a young age and I had always wanted to work for Sky. I visited the Sky Up Academy Studios back in 2022 for a trip with my drama school, and I vividly remember the inspiring moment I stepped onto the campus for the first time.
It was a great experience and a key moment when I realised this is what I want to do. I want to work here. Three years later, I applied for an apprenticeship, hoping I'd get the opportunity to return to Sky, and now I work here every day, in the same building I did the Sky Up Academy Studio experience with three years ago.
It goes to show that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, and as cliché as it sounds, dreaming big can take you places. Even places as exciting as Sky!
What has been a career highlight/project for you that allowed you to make a difference?
A highlight so far has to be getting involved in the apprenticeship launch content. I created a 'day in the life' video for Life at Sky social media channels. I was interviewed about my experience as an apprentice and served as a guest speaker at the apprenticeship launch event.
I have really enjoyed working with the early careers team, as it has allowed me to grow in confidence, get creative and make a difference by acting as a voice for the apprentices here at Sky. I have received some really positive feedback on the content I have produced, which has been amazing, and I am excited by the opportunity to get involved again in the future.
The content creation projects have been so fun, a great way to make friends, get involved and was a rewarding 'full circle moment' - as it feels like only yesterday that I was applying for an apprenticeship at Sky.
I truly believe apprenticeships here at Sky are life-changing and provide young people with incredible opportunities, so I love sharing how much of an amazing place Sky is!
Another standout moment so far was completing my first booking from the planning team on my own. For weeks, I had watched and shadowed my team members as they completed tasks such as ingests and exports, which gave me the confidence to have a go myself.
Previously, I had been working with training media - so it was great to work with real client media, not even two months into my apprenticeship. I completed the job on time and notified the team, which was a really rewarding moment.
There have been many more highlights since joining Sky, but I'll mention one more - getting to shadow the audio department in an audio dubbing suite. I thoroughly enjoyed my overviews with all the different areas of post production and I was really grateful to be invited back into a department I found really fascinating to shadow- audio.
I got to sit in the suite for a few hours and take notes whilst an audio mix was being worked on and I found this really inspiring, definitely something I'm interested in learning more about to help me succeed in my role.
What about your role makes you feel excited, ambitious and inspired?
At Sky, there is a 'never stand still' feeling, and this is evident in post-production. I feel excited about the endless opportunities for progression and development that are in front of me.
From my role, there are many different pathways I could take, and as an apprentice, I am encouraged to explore and embrace these, which I have been doing since day one. In the apprentice induction, we were told to say 'yes' to every opportunity that comes our way, and since working here, I can really see why.
So many amazing opportunities present themselves and are an exciting way to get stuck in to the wonderful world of Sky. There is so much support in terms of progression here, for example, Sky even has a growth and development week coming up, where there is a week of workshops and activities to get involved in to reflect and get inspired. Opportunities like these make me feel excited for my future at Sky.
Walking into the Sky Studios building every day is so inspiring in itself; it is incredible to think I came straight out of sixth form and managed to secure such a great role in such an inspiring environment, doing a job I've always wanted to do. It really is a 'pinch me' moment and an opportunity I am truly grateful for.
How would you describe the inclusive environment at Sky?
Sky is passionate about its ethos of inclusion, and this has been clear since day one. Beginning with an insightful session on diversity and inclusion in our apprentice induction, and it didn't stop there.
There have been many different events and activities celebrating diversity and individuality, including Diwali, mental health coffee catch-ups, and Black History Month events- there is something for everyone at Sky!
Employee networks are a great starting point to get involved, as they really create a sense of belonging within such a large company, allowing and encouraging you to connect with people and attend events which help support and raise awareness of inclusivity.
Sky's focus on inclusion shines through, creating a fair environment with a heart-warming sense of belonging for everyone at Sky.
What are the best perks and benefits at Sky?
I really enjoy the subsidised food options in my building, which I make the most of with friends at lunchtime.
The subsidised gym membership is a great benefit that I am making use of on a regular basis. It has a really good selection of kit, and I find it a great way to achieve a better work/life balance, clear my head, get away from the computer screen and move my body! I feel excited by the huge variety of classes available on the gym timetable.
