Paul Bourne

Transmission Support Team Lead, Chilworth

Customer facing /content | 14 June 2023 | 4 mins

I currently lead one of the broadcast transmission support teams for Sky. We provide 24/7 engineering support for the equipment that plays out Sky’s channels, as well as the monitoring and control systems used by the operational teams.

Our systems take content from live events, third party providers, Sky Studios and file-based delivery. The various elements are then combined to produce a channel, which we uplink to Satellites from our ground station at Chilworth – as well as distribute to third parties and for Internet or on-demand delivery.

We have a lot of physical equipment on premises as well as ever-growing cloud-based platforms.

Describe a project, or career highlight where you were able to make a difference.

For most engineering teams, the greatest success is when nobody notices we’re there! We’re proud to help deliver continuous content across over 120 channels day-in day-out.

It can feel like a big responsibility and can be stressful for the operational teams. A good day for us is when we’re able to alleviate that stress by finding workarounds, or resolutions.

At Sky we’re always challenging ourselves to deliver the next big thing. Describe what that’s like and why it’s exciting?

Sky is truly restless and systems are constantly evolving to provide a better offering for our customers.

We’re rapidly moving to IP-based workflows and cloud-based systems that allow us greater agility and improved resilience.

It’s exciting to work with bleeding edge technologies, and be able to contribute to teams and systems that are at the forefront of innovation.

How is Sky an inclusive place to work where you can be yourself?

The teams and people at Sky understand the importance of diversity. Our systems are strengthened in a technical perspective by having diverse equipment and data links. Where one struggles, another may be really strong.

It’s no different when it comes to diversity of people. With a range of backgrounds and ideas making the whole team stronger.

We achieve that by a genuine inclusivity that is built into our culture.
