It's a thumbs up to recognition and team work in our Production Services team

Sky Careers

Name:  Marcus Dean

Job title: Editorial Compliance Executive

What area of Sky do you work in? Editorial Compliance within Sky Production Services

What’s your career journey been like up until now? Never boring and somewhat convoluted! I started in Sky’s Tape Library for a few years and then moved to National Geographic. I worked in their Traffic department to focus on re-versioning programmes for European broadcasters. I returned here a couple of years later to help our Media Management team work on moving our content from tapes to a new tapeless workflow. Whilst doing this I developed an interest in editing and trained for about three years to become an Editor. This role put me in contact with the Compliance team who I was able to shadow for a period until I was in a fortunate position to get an interview and join the team.

What does a typical day working here look like for you? The great thing about my job’s the variety of work – it’s never dull. The range of viewing I do can leap between high profile HBO shows, Sports highlight packages or Virtual Reality content.  Every day is different!

If you’ve been here over one year, how have you made a difference in your role? Our team’s constantly getting involved with new areas across the business and I like to be involved in these developments. I learn more when our team takes on new work which means my role remains fresh and challenging.

What’s been your proudest moment since working here? It’s nice to be recognised for your hard work. Sky Production Services have a scheme that recognises and rewards employees for going above and beyond. I won this recently for my work in taking on and helping to develop a new Sports Compliance workflow. It was hard work but I was very proud! Also, seeing our team go from strength to strength within the company is brilliant, everyone puts in a lot of work.

What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? I’m lucky as the Compliance team and managers are all really helpful. There is a constant discussion over the fine points of what we view and the team really come together when making decisions about trickier compliance areas. I never feel out on my own, it’s a proper team. That makes me happy.

Describe your work/life balance? We’re a rota-based department so you generally know what you’re going to be doing in advance. The days are intense sometimes but I still have time in the evenings to plug in my guitar and jump around a bit making a noise. Or even do actual adult stuff!

What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career? The company are really great with training and creating shadowing opportunities with other departments - hence me having a few major changes in direction over the years! We’re always on the lookout for people who are talented and keen to push themselves.

An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you? I think Abba were a far better band than Radiohead. This isn’t going online, right?!
