Name: Angela McAlister

Job title: People+ Advisor

What area of Sky do you work in? HR People+ team- Livingston

How did you get to where you are now? I have a wealth of previous experience in areas of L&D, generalist HR and project management for large multinational financial institutions and a clinical research company. Returned to University and attained Distinction in my HR Business Management degree which enabled me to combine theoretical with practical knowledge. My tenacious appetite for new challenges has ensured that I’ve been proactive in looking for career opportunities.

Describe a typical day… I can honestly say that within HR here, there isn’t really a typical day, no 2 days are ever the same as we deal with a plethora of questions and issues from over 25,000 employees via phone or email. Queries range from the simple to the extremely complex from the cameraman in Afghanistan, to the sales advisor in the contact centre, the make-up artist to the Head of Department. The diversity of our colleagues makes the job challenging and exciting as we need to ensure that we’re up to date on any new information, changes to employment law or processes that may impact our colleagues.

What do you specialise in and work with on a daily basis? Answering HR queries, supporting the management team through provision of Team Leader cover where required, pivotal in the formulation of a new induction programme and the delivery of training to new People+ advisors.

Describe your work/life balance? I have an amazing work/life balance down to the fact that I work a 4 day week which enables me to perfectly balance my home and work responsibilities.

What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? Every day brings new challenges, new experiences and new opportunities to learn. Most of all I thrive on the personal satisfaction from resolving HR related issues for our people and our great team rapport.

What would be your advice to someone who’d want to do what you’re doing? People+ is a great place for anyone to start who is looking for an exciting HR career where individuals will be able to gain generalist HR experience and also develop sound HR knowledge within a dynamic, challenging environment.

An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you? Lived abroad for 12 years in the USA, Greece, France and Italy and speak fluent Italian. I’ve even dabbled in a little bit of translation.
