Our Finance Apprentice Lauren shares what makes her life at sky so unique and the team that make it special
“What’s surprised me the most is definitely the amount of responsibility you’re given from the start, despite your age and experience. It’s really rewarding to know that I’m trusted to do a great job, and gives me confidence in the work I produce.”
Job title / Experience you’re taking or had: Finance Apprentice in Sales and Marketing Group Finance
Describe your role in one word: Varied
Describe a typical day: I don’t have a typical day as the priorities and workload of my team changes all the time, but every month I help manage the month end process for my department, which involves analysing our actuals against prior forecasts/expectations, providing commentary against any key movements and submitting it into our internal system.
Describe your work/life balance at Sky? Flexible working is a key message here, so you’re encouraged to work from home/in another part of the building if it suits your schedule better. I also get time off when I’m studying for my CIMA qualification, which enables me to go to college and also take time off to revise for my exams.
What do you enjoy the most about your role and what’s surprised you the most? I enjoy the variety of things I get to work on; being in the Consolidation team of my department means I get to help put together the end product, before it goes to our Heads/Director of Finance, or higher. This can be anything from our latest view of our financial position for the year, to the results of the latest People Survey. What’s surprised me the most is definitely the amount of responsibility you’re given from the start, despite your age and experience. It’s really rewarding to know that I’m trusted to do a great job, and gives me confidence in the work I produce.
What’s your work environment like? I’m lucky to work in Sky Central, the great new office building (complete with a cinema space and a Waitrose!), where there’s a real buzz of activity every day, and loads of different work spaces to try out - from standing desks, individual pods and even sofas. My team is quite sociable, so even if we’re not sitting right next to one another we take time to catch up, have lunch together, or just keep each other busy by asking questions!
Your top application tip for people applying / what did you do to stand out?Show your passion! Getting your enthusiasm across in your application is a great way of demonstrating your interest in the role. Also, be prepared – make sure you’ve done your research into the company and role, and try to come up with some answers ready for the questions you might be asked. Don’t forget to relax and enjoy the experience, though!
An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you: I’ve met 15 of the actors/actresses in Game of Thrones – I’m a big fan!
