Sky Careers

Name: Suraj

Age: 19

Job title: Apprentice Software Developer

Describe your role in one word: Exciting

Describe a typical day: No day’s the same which makes my job very intriguing, however there are certain things I do everyday. For example, I come in around 8:30am on most days and we have stand-up at 10am. This is where the team gets together and each person talks about what they did the day before and what they are going to work on today. After stand-up for instance, I work on the task I’m currently working on or if it’s finished I can pick up something new. I work on that task for the rest of the day where I could be pairing with someone else so we both work on it together.

Describe your work/life balance at Sky? My work/life balance is great because I’m quite flexible on what time I get to work (just as long as I do my hours of course). My scrum master is very relaxed with what time people come in and leave because he trusts us completely to manage our own time. I can also work from home if I find I’m not able to come in, which is always a nice option to have.

What do you enjoy the most about your role and what’s surprised you the most? What I love about my job is that there’s always something new to learn and there’s many different ways to solve challenging problems. Whenever I do find that might be a struggle, I can always ask my colleagues for guidance and there’s always  support for me. I’m so amazed at how many different opportunities there are across the business from sales & marketing to engineering. The many different ways to progress is endless here and  we strive to make sure every individual develops their skills in the best possible way.

What’s your work environment like? It’s a very relaxed environment, with nice breakout areas where people can have informal conversations. There are also many kitchen areas where people can make coffees, store food in the fridge or use the microwave which is great of course if you want to bring in your own food. Central to our campus, is a nice plaza area where people go to unwind during lunch or whenever they feel like it. The restaurants are fantastic offering a wide range of food across the workplace that is healthy and tasty. The new building, Sky Central has many new facilities including a cinema and a Little Waitrose. All these services encourage the whole workforce to create great products for our customers.

Your top application tip for people applying / what did you do to stand out? When applying, make sure you know the business well. Do plenty of research beforehand into what the core values of the business are and research what your job entails. You have to demonstrate what you have to offer for the company and how dedicated you are to improving them. Give lots of examples during the interview, try and bring a portfolio if you can. The main thing is, be yourself and hopefully they will see the potential in you.

An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you: I like to play Chess in my spare time and have met the world champion Magnus Carlsen.
