Broadcast Services deliver a world class entertainment experience for our customers when they are at home, online or on the move.

Our TV Engineering teams provide  24/7 proactive maintenance and reactive support. This ensures industry leading levels of availability for a diverse range of end to end broadcast systems and services. Broadcast Engineering brings all platform design, development, delivery and support activity under a single key focus group.

We have developed an off the shelf programme, tapping into all different areas within TV Engineering; from Design, through to Support and the Asset Management of our equipment throughout Sky’s site.

Your key responsibilities

Once we know a bit about you we will tailor your week with us to ensure you gain the best experience for you.

There are various roles within Engineering; we are involved in the Making, Shaping and Sharing of Broadcast material.

Making - We support and look after the technology used in the studios from cameras to sound mixing desks along with the video walls and galleries. 

Shaping – We support and look after the editing and graphics suites where the programmes are made, including the creative equipment.  We also provide graphics and data programming software support for our 24/7 live channels Sky news and Sky Sports News.

Sharing – We support transmission of all of the channels from our transmission centres in Chilworth  and Osterley. We help content delivery to make sure incoming content from around the world gets to the right place in the right format for broadcast.

Your skills

You must be keen, enthusiastic and interested in Broadcast or TV technology/engineering with good level of maths. We are looking for individuals that are born problem solvers with an inquisitive mind, as this really is the department that takes a look ‘under the bonnet’ of Broadcasting.

TV Operations (Technology)

Work experience in Broadcast Operations will provide you with an opportunity to rotate around our four key areas - Broadcast Delivery Planning, Live Content Delivery, Playout and Broadcast Platforms.

About the programme

We develop, support and manage all the applications that are used to schedule and broadcast our content – whether that goes out via satellite, online or our ‘On Demand’ platform.

Your key responsibilities

This Technology work experience in TV Operations will provide you with an opportunity to rotate around our four key areas:

Broadcast Delivery Planning – This team organise and co-ordinate live and non-live content feeds that come into Sky Studios. Arranging the delivery of all of Sky’s content from a Premier League football match to a live interviews with guests for Sky News. It can be a fast paced, hectic environment, with daily challenges but it’s very rewarding watching content you’ve helped organise get ‘on the air’.

 

Live Content Delivery - receives all the live broadcast signals coming in to Sky for the Studios and Transmission and Ingest areas.  Whether it’s SD, HD, UHD or New Media they quality control and troubleshoot on a constant basis to make sure we get the best pictures and audio for all our live programmes.

Playout - manage over 100 TV channels delivering award winning live coverage to our customers. Our team makes sure that live feeds coming in from around the world are integrated seamlessly into the programme schedules and ensure that this remains so even when events change, responding to delays, overruns and postponements which are all possible in a live TV environment.

Broadcast Platforms – Integrate, monitor and support various systems that form Sky’s Satellite and Online TV Platforms consisting of areas in Digital Broadcasting, Satellite Uplink, Video On Demand and Online Streaming ensuring all these systems and services are working correctly for a perfect customer service.

Your skills

We’re looking for candidates with good communication skills coupled with an analytical and inquisitive mind to troubleshoot and resolve problems in a live broadcast environment, and most importantly a passion for excellence.   TV Operations deliver the content to our customers and ensure quality of delivery and experience, this is very different to production so if you’re interested in content production or want to be a presenter this is not the experience for you.

Making sure that people know about Sky’s amazing products and services is the job of our Marketing team, and to be able to do that effectively not only are they experts in Sky, they know everything about our customers too.

If you’d like to find out more about Marketing and the roles available within the sector, then why not come and join us for work experience?  We’ve got places for people aged 17 and over, across a wide range of teams – everything from our social media, research and planning teams through to the teams who work on specific products such as box sets or movies.

At Sky, Marketing is made up of a number of areas. Product Management delivers the latest cutting-edge products and services that keep Sky ahead of the competition, whether that’s TV, broadband, mobile or other services. Brand Marketing keeps the public aware of Sky’s products and services– whether it’s the latest innovations in TV technology such as Sky Q, the next generation box, new shows, including Sky Original productions, or even products like  NOW TV; Trading deals directly with our customers, either through online or direct marketing  channels in order to win new business and keep the customers we have; we also have a big research team which provides the data, analysis and insight that highlights marketing opportunities and drives our overall strategy.

We’re inviting students aged 16  - 21 who are interested in gaining an insight into a career in law to join us at  Sky’s  HQ for a day hosted by  Sky’s Legal team. The day will include a chance to meet members of the team, hear first-hand what they do, take part in interactive sessions as well as getting plenty of opportunities to network and ask questions.

Sky Media is the advertising sales arm of Sky.  Through a mixture of work sessions, short presentations, various tasks and a week-long project, we’ll help you to understand how we expose brands large and small to their preferred target audiences, covering over 95% of the UK population

Your responsibilities

Our week-long shadow work experience is your chance of first-hand exposure to all of our departments.  Your learning experience will start from the moment you join us, and you’ll leave being able to demonstrate what you’ve picked up along the way.  You’ll understand how we operate, and will be able to explain to others why we do what we do – and how complex this can be.  Your presentation skills will improve too!

On the day you’ll get the chance to meet some of our best people in Sky News, Corporate Affairs (PR, Communications and Public Affairs) and Sky Sports News to hear first-hand what they do and take part in interactive sessions to help you understand the day to day of their roles. You’ll get plenty of opportunities to network and ask questions. We’ll even throw in lunch and a tour.

You don’t need any previous journalism experience or be studying journalism, but you do need to be able to demonstrate an interest in this area. The day will be held at our campus in Osterley on Monday 22nd October from approximately 10am-4pm and you’ll need to be able to make your own way there. The departments involved in the day are:

About the programme

Sky Production Services aim to be the best place in the industry to create and deliver content that people love. We want to give our customers the best viewing experience, from the picture they see, the sound they hear to the entertainment, sports or news programme they choose to watch.

The department is made up of three main areas; Production Studios, Post Production and Content Services .You’ll spend time in each of the areas.

Studios:

Our Studios cover the following crafts: Cameras, Sound, Lighting, Scenery, Makeup, Floor managers, Vision mixing, Graphics and Autocue.

  • Our customers include Sky News, Sky Sports News, Sky Sports, Entertainment & Corporate  
  • We crew studios as well as International Outside Broadcasts from the Ryder Cup to Formula 1
  • We are experts in HD & 3D Production techniques, and have been involved in and advised on 4k testing
  • We are based in the most sustainable broadcast facility in Europe

 

Post Production:

The main role of the department is to offer editing and post production studio. We offer services to different areas of the business; from fast turnaround Sky Sports News editing, to long form craft editing for Sky Entertainment programmes. They have 75 edit suites, which are situated across the whole of the Sky Campus and six post production audio suites.

Content Services:

As a whole, Content Services are responsible for getting great TV content and all the associated information and files into Sky, processing it through the Sky system and finally to air. They deal with all forms of media from tape to file, from flat files to stills. If it’s content seen on air or on your Sky planner, then Content Services would have dealt with it. 

Your key responsibilities

You could join us for 3 days, experiencing first hand, a real life production environment as well as seeing how the back-end office works to support these functions. Please note due to the nature of live television, it’s not always possible to give candidates hands on experience in some areas of the live studio environment.

Your skills

This programme is ideal for those who've had limited experience and want an overview of a range of roles in production. It is not suitable for those who already know a specific role they want to do for their career as it's a rotational programme.
