As an Apprentice on this programme, you’ll be placed within one of three teams depending on the outcome of your assessment centre. The teams are as follows:

  • Operations – This department is responsible for Design, Deliver and Support our Tech UK infrastructure, which includes Virtualization, Servers, UNIX, Databases, Data Centre, Storage and Workload Automation. You’ll learn about how these systems are crucial to keeping all of Sky’s Business areas working to ensure a seamless customer experience for any that uses or contacts Sky.
  • Project Management/Coordination – In this role, you’ll play a key part in managing Infrastructure Delivery projects involving changes to technical infrastructure and support services.  This covers a wide variety of projects including In-Building and Data Centre Projects.
  • UK Information Systems Team – You will gain experience in a number of Software Engineering areas, which may include Testing, Automation, Technical Analysis, Operational Support and Development. These teams provide Technical solutions and services to all our Contact Centre and Engineer communities as well as maintaining the systems required to support various online and interactive services provided to Sky’s 11 million UK customer base. 

 

Qualification achieved: Level 8 IT and Telecoms Professionals SCQF

How our programme works:

As an Apprentice on this programme, you’ll be placed within one of the teams below depending on the outcome of your assessment centre. The teams include:

 

  • Operations – This department is key to delivering the great content that Sky’s customers love. TV Operations is very much a 24/7 department, ensuring quality standards and deadlines are maintained whatever the hour, day or night. Our people are mainly shift workers who monitor and respond to events as and when they happen. They’re the ones that ensure there are no interruptions to our satellite and OTT (Broadband & Mobile) services. They plan and coordinate live feeds for Sky News, Sky Sports & Sky’s Entertainment channels, ensure programmes are accurately delivered to schedules, adjusting as required by changes and the dynamic nature of live broadcast and ensure the delivery of channels and content to customers through a huge range of delivery streams. As an apprentice you’ll gain a variety of experience as you rotate through our departments; following the life-cycle of Sky’s content.  You’ll gain knowledge and experience in each of the departments that are instrumental in our operations and how they interact with each other to give a seamless delivery to customers.

To join the TV Operations Department, you will need to be 18 or over. We’re looking for strong team players, with good communication skills and who possess a great attention to detail.

 

  • Integration & Test – This department is responsible for testing the technology that connects our TV systems to our online and satellite products such as Sky Q, Sky Store, Now TV and Sky Go. Things you’ll learn will include finding out how our TV software works and how to find bugs and work with other technology teams to create solutions to problems discovered during testing. An interest in the testing process is key and a curious mind with a passion for problem-solving.  

 

  • UK Information Systems – Technical Operations – This team is responsible for the correct functioning, availability and problem solving of the software applications used by Sky for its Broadband, Talk and Mobile Ordering and Repair services.  In this team you will learn how software systems are created and operated by Sky. You’ll gain practical knowledge and skills in a diverse set of software technologies that will include application tools, database query languages, scripting languages, web portal, data analysis tools and more, all relevant to Data and Voice services. The team operate in an energetic and diverse environment, responding to events and incidents to restore service quickly. We operate during core business hours (09:00 -17:30) and with an on-call rota at all times outside of that. The role calls for a good team player with key abilities to think logically and correlate diverse inputs into an accurate analysis result. 

 

  • Broadband and Telephony Network Delivery- In this department you’ll learn how to solve problems effectively in a highly technical and fast-moving environment. You’ll learn how to analyse and communicate information in a clear and concise way. Understanding how to plan, prioritise and co-ordinate work (often to short working deadlines) within various teams. This apprenticeship will equip you with the fundamental skills for a career in project management.

 

  • Enterprise Technology Infrastructure Technician-. As an apprentice within Enterprise Technology you’ll gain experience in a number of areas within technology. You’ll get the chance to spend time with several teams who manage and support the systems used here at Sky that allow our colleagues to successfully conduct their jobs. During your time on this programme, you’ll be involved with many technologies such as, Windows 10, Office 365, app development, network fundamentals, Video Conferencing and ITIL foundation. This apprenticeship will prepare you for a career in the rapidly evolving field of Technology.

You will achieve a Level 4 Network Engineer Standard, Level 4 Infrastructure Technician Standard, Level 3 Infrastructure Technician or Level 4 Associate Project Manager Standard (depending on the outcome of your assessment).

  • You’ll then be placed into different areas of Sky to work on real projects called ‘Educational Projects’. You’ll work alongside senior Software Engineers and experience everyday life at Sky in an exciting technical environment.  
  • You’ll have the chance to get to grips with open source tools and web technologies such as Ruby, Scala, Javascript, PHP and Java, HTML, CSS, Node JS, Python, Jenkins, GIT, etc.    

Qualification achieved: Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship with a potential to progress up to a level 6 (equivalent to a full degree qualification).

Your skills:

  • A passion for technology and a strong interest in programming and coding
  • Ideally you’ll have some coding experience. This could be from school or from having a go at home
  • Good communication and team working skills
  • You’ll be able to pick things up quickly and work well under pressure

How our programme works and your key responsibilities

During your first week, you’ll be enrolled into a tailored Marketing Bootcamp to learn the basics of marketing and key skills to succeed in this field. Following this, your first year will be spent in one of three Marketing teams (TV Products, Broadband or Mobile). The second year of your programme will be spent doing two six month rotations in Digital Marketing (Digital Strategy or Online Trading).

 

Marketing (Year 1)

Deeply embedded in the brand, you’ll get an understanding of everything there is to know about our products in order to gain new customers and keep existing ones too. You’ll also help ensure our products are commercially viable and exactly what our customers want.

You’ll gain an understanding of multiple marketing channels including Email, DM, Radio, Press, TV and Digital Display working with our creative agencies to execute end to end Marketing Campaigns for your assigned products. You’ll need to be monitoring performance on an ongoing basis and ensuring the campaign stays on budget and on target.

The Marketing teams are highly ambitious, driven and dynamic and the diversity of the role itself will give you a well-rounded set of skills to take forward in your career.

 

Digital Strategy (Year 2)

You’ll learn about developing digital marketing communications, gain an understanding of multiple digital media channels, predominantly display advertising, video and native (including social). You’ll work closely with our media planning and buying agency to ensure the highest standards are met across our activity. The team is highly ambitious, driven and dynamic and prides itself on driving the development of world-class approaches to Digital Marketing.

 

Online Trading (Year 2)

You’ll learn to find opportunities to cross sell and upsell TV bundles and mobile packages to our existing customer base via the online e-commerce site. You’ll need to prioritise activity that will deliver the best results. Focussing on driving core customer experience and revenue to the business. You’ll be working with Internal and external stakeholders (legal, brand, product teams, finance, e-experience, procurement, creative agencies) to ensure any new offers or creative are approved and launched in a timely and cost efficient manner.

 

Qualification achieved: PR and Communications Apprenticeship Standard 

 

Your skills

About the programme

Our Finance teams cover everything from financial reporting to management accounting and investor relations. And our team is second to none. We’ve been voted Employer of the Year at the CIMA awards for the entire European media sector.

You’ll take part in rotations within Finance whilst undertaking a Business Improvement Project over the two years of the programme. At the end of your course you'll acheive a CIMA Higher Apprenticeship in Management Accounting, Level 4. This will develop your commercial awareness and provide you with experience in accounting techniques. So, whether you’re making sure invoices and expenses are paid on time, ensuring Sky’s monies are collected or even assisting with Sky’s tax reporting, you’ll gain real life exposure to helping make our finance team award-winning. Wherever you work, you will quickly learn the importance of putting our customers’ interests at the forefront of what you do.

Qualification achieved: CIMA Higher Apprenticeship in Management Accounting, Level 4

What we look for

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Good numeracy skills
  • Excellent team working skills as you’ll be part of a fast paced, fun Finance team

About the programme

Our Finance teams cover everything from financial reporting to management accounting and investor relations. And our team is second to none. We’ve been voted Employer of the Year at the CIMA awards for the entire European media sector.You’ll be part of the Commercial Finance team within the Sales & Marketing group, focusing on key month end processes, variance analysis, budgeting and forecasting cycles. In addition, you’ll learn how to prepare management reports and consolidate/analyse data from various sources. This team is responsible for managing key financial information helping to support the Sales and Marketing teams stay head of the competition.

You will be supported as you study alongside your role for the CIMA Higher Certificate in Management Accounting, level 4, and complete assignments to showcase the skills you’ll learn.

You’ll quickly learn the importance of putting our customers’ interests at the forefront of what you do, working with teams in other areas of the business to meet and exceed targets. There will be the opportunity to develop your commercial awareness and gain experience in accounting techniques.

Duration: Two years
Requirements: Minimum of 5 GCSEs A* – C (including a minimum grade B in English Language) plus a minimum of two A Level grades from A* – C, or a BTEC Diploma (merit or distinction) in a relevant subject

How our programme works and your key responsibilities

As an Apprentice on this two year programme, you’ll be  part of the whole editorial process. From news gathering to researching stories, through to booking guests and writing scripts. Gaining insight into one of the world's leading news organisations, you'll learn how we deliver news across all our platforms - on TV, mobile phones, on social media and to commercial radio stations.

 

  • In the first year, you’ll spend your first three months at college as you work towards achieving your qualification; attending our offices when required to support your training. 
  • When the course is completed, you’ll spend time across departments within Sky News. This will include spending time with Reporters, Producers, Camera Crews, Gallery staff and Researchers and eventually work across all areas of our output - TV, mobile, radio and social media.
  • In the second year, we'll help you select an area to start specialising in.

 

Please note: When working within the team you’ll work with a wide range of Sky content, some of which is not suitable for under 18s.  As a responsible employer and broadcaster, we therefore cannot accept applications from people who wouldn’t have reached the age of 18 by 10th September 2018.

Qualification achieved: Diploma in Journalism, Level 3 (Accredited by the NTCJ)

Your skills:

  • A passion for news content and current affairs.
  • Excellent communication and team working skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and pick things up quickly.
  • Able to work well under pressure.
  • Minimum of 5 GCSE grades A*-C (including English and Maths plus a minimum grade B in English Language). In addition, a minimum of two A-Levels grades A* – C, or a BTEC Diploma (merit or distinction) in a relevant subject.
