Name: Sean Lightfoot

Tell us a bit about your role – what’s your job title and what do you do at Sky?

My job title is Broadband Technical Specialist. What do I do? Well, where do I start?! My main role is to assist and to rectify customer Broadband and Talk related issues, either internally (replacing equipment, telephone socket’s, extensions etc) or improving Wi-Fi coverage within the customer's house. I also escalate jobs to Open Reach.

I’m also an Agony Aunt! I love a good conversation, so some customers can tell me some amazing and interesting stories. Some can be amusing, others can be heartbreaking, and I love the fact they feel comfortable enough to share those stories with me.

What were you doing before you joined?

I am about to celebrate my tenth year with Sky, but before then, I had hair! I have done many jobs over the years, including working in a factory, driving FLT. However, when I joined Sky, I knew this was my job for life.

What do you enjoy most about your role? 

I love the variety. I never wake up thinking ‘Oh, not another day in work’. Although the work can be repetitive; meeting new people and working within a great team means no two days are the same.

Also, seeing the joy on the customers face, when they see the difference you have made to their broadband or given them savings on their bill, gives me great satisfaction.

What’s your team like?

We are a mixed bunch. We live all across the Northwest and North Wales, so there is lots of football banter on match days. Between us, we have many years’ experience in broadband and home technology and utilise each set of skills to improve the customers' experience with us. If one person doesn’t know the answer to something, then guaranteed, one of us will.

What training and support have you received working here?

When I was given the role, I went on an extensive training course, in Solihull and Knaresborough, to gain knowledge troubleshooting for broadband, gaining a vast knowledge on how broadband actually reaches the customers' property.

I am supported continually by my peers and manager, we are just one big family. We should be called The Waltons!

So far, what’s been your biggest achievement here?

A number of months ago, I applied to be a Mentor, in which I was a successful applicant. I embraced the role fully, supporting new team members to the role.

A fun fact about you.

On a family holiday many years ago, we were playing “Olympics” and as I went to attempt the long jump, I got the whole of the beach clapping along with me. Unfortunately, as I got to the line to jump, I fell flat on my face, much to the amusement of the family and the 100+ people watching.
