"The most enjoyable thing about my job, is being able to work with pretty much every single team."
Name: Kevin Mithani
Job title: Senior Product Owner - Digital
What area of Sky do you work in? Data Intelligence – Business Capabilities NOW TV
What’s your career journey been like up until now? I started off as a Junior Analyst in a Media company, mining data and extracting insight from mentions in offline media e.g. Newspapers and Magazines for companies like Nokia. As I moved through my career, I fell in to the Analytics world, where I was using tools like IBM Core Metrics, Web Trends, and Adobe Analytics to understand customer behaviour on our digital estate. It was really great understanding customer behaviour and realising so many odd things they do, I wanted to challenge myself further so I decided to flip into a new role that looks after the implementation side of Analytics. This meant I needed to be more creative and more logical, but also meant I needed to learn new skills like Java Script and HTML. I really enjoyed this, and did this for a few year, before I was running a team of analyst as a Manager.
To me, because I came from the group up, I appreciated all the skills required to get to where I was, and supported all my team to push themselves. After doing this for a few more years, I was ready for my next challenge, which is my current role, working as an Product Owner and being more strategic in my decisioning but also acting like a consultant or an advisor to the business, as to what we should do to be ahead of the technology curve. It is extremely exciting, as I know interact with teams, that I thought I would never have thought of doing in my previous role, e.g. Procurement, Legal etc.
What does a typical day working here look like for you? A typical day as a Product owner, is you are normally working on multiple very large scale projects, as a SME (Subject Matter Expert). I usually need to attend meeting, and help articulate, how best to move into a new territory, from an analytics, vendor and capability perspective. I would then have many questions at my desk, on simple reporting and dashboarding questions, to very complex how do we tag a media player accurately for each of our 2 million customers to understand what they are watching. I would be usually be working on a proposal of some sort, recommending the business to invest in or asking our existing vendors to support us more to make the best use of the tool. I would then usually end the day with many emails to catch up on and many external emails, from Vendors trying to sell to me.
If you’ve been here over one year, how have you made a difference in your role? In the last 12 months, I have recommended the business to invest in 3 new tools, and they have proceeded with 2 and are considering the 3rd. I have recommended we switched our agency partner, and we have successfully stood up a new team with the new agency. I have supported 8 new initiatives, in which 6 out of the 8 have now been implemented and are live, and 2 are still work in progress.
What’s been your proudest moment since working here? My proudest moment of working here, is when I was working on launching Sky Q which was a 2-year project and I was recognised for my hard work and received multiple nominations and rewards for the effort. You feel very special when things come together, and a sense of accomplishment, but to be recognised within a big company is very rewarding.
What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? The most enjoyable thing about my job, is being able to work with pretty much every single team from Technology, to Brand & Strategy to Legal and Procurement.
Describe your work/life balance? Work life balance here is the best, according to everyone I speak to, outside of the business. I have 2 young children, a 9 month old and a 2 year old, and at this young age, I want to be part of their growing up and ensuring I am there for their key milestone. Over a 2 week period I do an extended hour each day for 9 days, and take every other Friday off. This give me my time with my family and I get to do small things like take kids to nursery on my day off.
What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career? Keep trying, work hard and don’t give up. Does not matter you didn’t start in the career you want to get into, just put some effort and you can make it, where ever you go. I once hired a qualified Dentist, who had a passion for analytics and self-taught himself, it can happen, just give it a go.
An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you? I starred in the 3rd Movie of Harry Potter – Prisoner of Azkaban. I had 2 lines, but they both got caught out, but the director really wanted me in the movie, so he decided to put me in the Hogwarts train, and I was waving to my mother on the platform. Great experience.
