"You get out what you put in and you will always get your just desserts for going the extra mile in the end."
Name: Katherine Seymour
Job title: Senior Project Manager
What area of Sky do you work in? Change Delivery within Customer Service Group
What’s your career journey been like up until now? I joined three years ago from a consulting background and worked on my first project with Now TV for a year, introducing a new broadband capability for Now TV. It was challenging getting thrown in at the deep end with a totally new subject area for me in Broadband and my first time working with our technology and operations teams, but it was a great first project to get an overview of how everyone here works together so brilliantly to get the job done. The next year and a half was spent supporting the launch of our Sky Mobile proposition, for me project managing the setup of our supply chain initially and then managing our roadmap of ongoing improvements post-launch. I’m now working on a programme to improve the capability across our Sales contact centres, giving our people the right tools to do a fantastic job. Yet another completely new topic area for me but that’s the great thing about working here; no two projects are ever the same!
What does a typical day working here look like for you? I spend a lot of my day with our stakeholders across the business, ensuring they’re across all of the items that we’re delivering on a given project and supporting our business analysts and project managers to align their views and ensure we have clear direction on all of our projects. A lot of my job is also coordinating with our different delivery partners across our online, technology and reporting teams to ensure we’re all aligned in our delivery approach.
If you’ve been here over one year, how have you made a difference in your role? I joined as a project manager and have since been promoted to a senior project manager and also have taken on line management responsibilities. I try to spend a lot of my time coaching and developing our junior project managers and graduates, both those who I work with on projects and in my team, sharing my experience with them and giving them guidance in how to approach their projects and grow their career here.
What’s been your proudest moment since working here? Probably the day we put Sky Mobile live – it was certainly a big push for the finish line but everyone worked fantastically as a team to hit our aggressive launch targets.
What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job? For me, the variety – both in the day to day and in the projects we do in the change delivery team. I enjoy working with a wide breadth of teams across our business on our projects, getting insight into how each of these areas operate, while having a great team of people around me in our Change Delivery function.
Describe your work/life balance? Work/life balance is definitely something that is given high priority here. Our teams work all over the country so everyone is very open to flexible working and I focus my working time on the hours that suit both me and my stakeholders rather than a totally fixed schedule. There are some very occasional late nights when we’re coming up to a big launch, but everyone mucks in and does their bit which is great, and we work really well together as a team to each other through some of the busier times.
What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career? Be open to opportunities that come your way. Many times in my career I’ve been faced with tasks that are out of my comfort zone or not in my desired area of work but this is how you best grow and develop yourself. You get out what you put in and you will always get your just desserts for going the extra mile in the end.
An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you? I spent my first 5 years of working life at school and through university working in a cake shop; making, icing (and eating) cakes – so if you ever need a birthday cake I’m your girl! ☺
