James' top tips on applying for a Strategy role at Sky
'Don't be afraid to offer your own ideas'
What attracted you to the Sky graduate programme?
Sky appealed to me in particular as it seemed to have a supportive and welcoming culture, with an emphasis on doing business responsibly. This combined with the fact that Sky is at the forefront of some exciting industries made it an attractive place to start my career
What does your typical day look like?
My new role in Planning and Strategy Implementation is helping manage the delivery of strategic projects important to the wider business. It involves frequent updates with various different teams on Skype to track their progress and highlight any issues that need to be raised. I also collate materials for and track actions from meetings between senior stakeholders associated with the project.
How does Sky encourage a good work life balance?
I take the free shuttle bus back and forth to the campus from Ealing which makes the commute fast and leaves more time for me to do things outside of work in the evening. It is easy enough to keep regular hours if you are on top of your work, and leaving your desk to eat lunch or go to the gym is encouraged!
How would you describe the culture and people at Sky in a few words?
Friendly, passionate, open, collaborative
What advice can you give to future applicants?
Do as much research as you can on Sky, their competitors and the markets they operate in. Don’t be afraid to offer your own ideas (but make sure you back them up!). And the classic – be yourself!
