Ronan McCarthy
Head of Acquisition
What area of the business do you work in?
NOW
What’s your career journey been like up until now?
I kicked off my career off by joining Paddy Power’s Brand Marketing Graduate Programme. It was great experiencing several different marketing functions as part of my rotation, with Digital Acquisition Marketing winning my strongest interest. It was this focus area of marketing that helped me land a job at Sky where a small team of us were tasked to launch NOW in Ireland. That was well over 5 years ago and since then I’ve contributed to the exceptional growth of the brand through my work across digital marketing, partnerships & proposition development.
What does a typical day working here look like for you?
The team I work with is responsible for all of NOW’s Digital Acquisition Marketing in Ireland. We need to be experts in upcoming movies, the most anticipated shows & unmissable sporting events. This is so we can execute digital marketing plans that target relevant audiences, at the right times, with channel specific creative that encourages them to sign up & stream unmissable entertainment on NOW.
What’s been your proudest moment since working here?
Being part of such a small team that launched NOW in Ireland is something I’m incredibly proud of. It was a massive challenge for all of us that required quick learning curve adoption, a lot of teamwork & forced us to be comfortable in the deep end. Seeing where the brand & team has grown to since then, makes the early work back then all the more fulfilling.
What’s the most enjoyable thing about your job?
That we get to talk about movies, TV shows & sport all day…… (for work purposes of course)
Describe your work/life balance?
Our director has always been a major champion of a healthy work/life balance and I think that foundation is what has made it so easy for our team to not only transition to hybrid working but to utilise it in a way that’s purposeful. That could mean a collaborative team planning session in the office or working from home so I’m not risking rush hour transport to make it to football training on time. I’ve the flexibility that supports those personal activities and the trust that my work will get done.
What advice would you give to others trying to develop their career?
Work for brands that you have a personal interest in or affinity with. You’ll develop in your career a lot faster as you’ll enjoy your work, you’ll pro-actively want to learn more and you’ll naturally end up getting more out of it. I’ve been lucky enough to work with two brands that overlap with my personal interests, and it’s made even the most challenging projects easier to engage with as the backdrop is always interesting to me.
An interesting fact/something no one else knows about you?
I ‘guest star’ in a YouTube video that went viral in Brazil with 2.2million views and counting.
