From Trainee, to Broadband Technical Expert at Sky

Why did you decide to join the Home Service Trainee Programme?
For many years, I wanted to be a Sky Engineer. I have had many skilled roles in the past and the Sky engineering role sparked my interest.
I always appeared hit a dead end on application, so when I was offered a position on the training programme with a possibility of joining the company, I jumped at it.
What does working in Home Service mean to you?
I am now part of the Broadband Tech team, supporting customers with their internet needs. This can be a very rewarding job, connecting customers with the outside world.
I wear my uniform with pride, Home Service brings so much to so many people; from entertainment, to ways to connect with their families and friends.
What is the most exciting thing about your role?
For me, it’s meeting different people every day from all walks of life. Visiting some of the most magnificent properties and people, and walking away from a customer knowing I have helped them and how much they appreciate you being there.
What’s been the biggest misconception you’ve noticed about working in Home Service?
I would say that when I became an engineer, I though it was going to be a lonely role as I would be on my own in my van, but it’s far from it. You have such a large supportive team around you that are always at the end of the phone.
You also meet so many people throughout the day, you never feel alone. From a customer’s perspective – this is often considered to be a male role, every day people are surprised to see a woman at their door.
What training and support have you had in your role?
Throughout may career at Sky, I have received several forms of training to support me achieve a high standard within my role. I have a City & Guilds in Telecommunications, safe drilling, health and safety ladder training, GIBBS training and other opportunities to learn.
What makes you feel most proud in your job?
I am proud of my current achievements within my career path, being part of Home Service has given me the chance to believe in myself and grow. Being part of Home Service makes me feel part of something amazing. I love my role within broadband and feel the future of Home Service is growing.
