Jules’ Happily Ever After!
‘Since I’ve met Margaret I’ve followed my dreams in every way’
My name is Jules Mcdonagh. I met my wife Margaret in 2012 when I tried to pitch and sell her Sky at the stand in Craigavon, N Ireland.
My wife came from the travelling community and since I came from the settled community it was a big learning curve, accepting each other’s cultures and trying to decide what way would suit us both and the way we wanted to live our lives.
Education, pushing myself on, and work have always been my top priorities in life. Before Margaret there were a lot of things that I took for granted – like being able to read. When I met Margaret I also met two beautiful daughters that I love and cherish. My eldest daughter Britney was completely illiterate at age 8.
Margaret and I soon realised that we had the same priorities- to raise a happy, beautiful family and enjoy our wonderful life together. I worked every day and night with Britney. I tutored her and made her realise that she was an amazing, intelligent person. She began P5 not being able to read or write and less than two years later went on to pass her transfer test and she is now attending one of the top grammar schools in N Ireland and hopes to study science at University – I am so proud of her!
After a couple of years, Margaret and I had a civil partnership. We then had two beautiful sons and our beautiful family is now complete
My eldest son who is 4 has severe learning difficulties and autism, it can be very challenging-Margaret and I support each other emotionally as much as we can and hold each other up. She is the rock of the family, we both have our different roles, I work, and Margaret is the most amazing stay at home parent – the perks of having a mum and a mummy.
Aside from my beautiful family, work and my career are so important to me and since I’ve Met Margaret I’ve followed my dreams in every way. First, I completed my undergraduate degree and I am now in the final stages of my masters, I’m hoping to start a PhD in October to research the gender pay gap.
I started at Sky in February and met Margaret in the June of that year, I may not have sold her Sky, but she is definitely the most important lead I’ve ever taken. I’m so blessed to have 4 beautiful children, an amazing wife and a fantastic career with Sky.
It has been difficult for the kids at school explaining that they have a mum and a mummy. However, we try to make our life as hassle free and positive as possible. We live in a small community where I grew up and everybody knows me, I always choose not to be around negative people. My child’s school is local, and the school are very supportive. I suppose the only struggle we have had is my wife being estranged from her family due to their non-acceptance of us because of their own cultural beliefs. I do respect this and her mother and sisters are now coming around a little bit, the men in the community will never accept us for who we are, it makes it difficult for both of us.
In conclusion, I can say that my once sales lead turned into my wife, a loving family, and my life, this story is basically to say never give up and you can make amazing magic happen if you just try.
