Nicole’s journey from Mama Youth to Media Operator
‘The Mama Youth Project has been crucial to my personal and professional growth.’
Describe the type of day to day activities that you conducted in the department that you joined on your placement.
I had my placement in Sky News Digital Department. I absolutely loved it – I was able to get involved in a range of roles. I shadowed and helped produce news bulletins with the Output Producers. I was able to source and edit videos for Snapchat. During my placement I also got to help out on The Pledge, it was here that I assisted in gathering research on current affairs issues, before editing videos to go on our social media platforms. I also got the opportunity to shadow some great producers on the Home and Foreign desk, and helped source guests for the Planning Team.
Are there any pieces of work/projects that you were particularly proud to be a part of?
I was really proud to write an article for Snapchat and I co-edited a video for Mobile: http://news.sky.com/story/misophonia-hating-certain-sounds-could-signal-brain-abnormality-10753959.
How would you reflect on your placement in terms of training and development?
The placement gave me a huge insight into how a newsroom operates. Before my placement, I had sought to develop my writing and video-editing skills, and the thorough training I received helped me to accomplish just that. This placement has given me such a great kick-start to pursuing a career in digital journalism, and the training and mentoring along the way has broadened my network here.
How did you transition from your placement to a role at Sky?
The transition was fairly smooth because I had learned the dynamics here and had met some great people who were able to offer me advice as I settled into my new job.
What does your role now see you doing?
In my new job as Media Operator, I work in Sky News Ingest and I monitor all the incoming feeds coming into Sky. I love being at the forefront of breaking stories and the responsibility that it entails.
How important has the Mama Youth Project been to your personal and professional growth?
The Mama Youth Project has been crucial to my personal and professional growth. They have given me full and extensive training in TV production and they shared with me honest advice that was needed for me to stand out in a much fast paced environment.
What would you say to someone thinking about getting involved with the Mama Youth Project?
Do it! It is an experience you will never forget, and it will set you up for life! I would not be where I am now if it wasn’t for Mama Youth Project and if you are aspiring for a strong career in the media than I would highly recommend it
