Kick Start Your Career in the New Year

Tips to help you make your career resolution last throughout the year.
Furthering your career is a popular New Year resolution, but how many of us make it into a reality? More importantly, how many of us can make our resolution last the whole year and not just until January 5th! Below are some tips to help you make your career resolution last throughout the year.
Winter ... review!
Use the colder, darker months in January as an opportunity to draw up a career plan and put together a number of specific goals that you want to fulfill in the New Year. Review everything you have achieved over the past year and measure how far you have progressed since the start of 2008. Make a list of what you enjoy and dislike most about your current job. This will help you assess areas to focus on in the future and make that decision about whether it's time to switch careers.
Spring ... cleaning!
Spring is a great time to clean up your contacts database. Networking is crucial in providing new job leads and opportunities. Remember though that networking is a process and not a one-time event, so use the time in spring to get back in touch with the people you've met and update their movements accordingly.
Also try to refresh your CV as a critical first step to securing your dream job. Recent studies show that the most popular form of CV is a historical CV. Therefore, make sure you update your CV with your current job and in particular recent responsibilities and accomplishments. Be sure to quantify your achievements wherever possible. If you don't do it now you may forget all your hard work and successes, making it trickier to update your CV in the future.
Summer ... relax!
Summer is the time to relax and recharge your batteries. It's important to take a holiday and regular breaks in order to avoid burnout from over working. By taking time out you can re-focus you attention, sharpen you wits and increase motivation. Holidays are a perfect opportunity to relieve stress, improve your health and realise there is more to life than just work.
Autumn...training!
Autumn sees the start of new courses and is a perfect time to enroll into that course you always wanted to take. This works both ways and could be either a chance to broaden your personal life such as a new sport or hobby, or could aid your work/life by re-training in order to make that career switch or progress up to the next notch on the ladder. Online courses are also a convenient way to brush up on your skills.
