Are You Ready To Retire?
Rebecca Garson | Thursday 28 August 2008 | 08:10
Here’s how to decide whether the time is right for you…
Retirement isn’t as simple as leaving a job. You have the extra worry of finances to deal with, as well as the transition to a new way of life. As a result, it is extremely important to make sure you are emotionally ready for your retirement.
"You can expect a period of tremendous confusion when you retire," says clinical psychologist Dr. Judith Coche. "It takes about two years to go from one place in human development to the next place,” she adds.
There are many ways to determine if you’re ready to retire and here are some of them:
1. You’ve outgrown your work
When you start a new career you are excited about going in to the office every day, meeting new people, learning new things and overcoming challenges. If you find that your job no longer stimulates you in this way and you don’t feel challenged anymore, it may be time to call it quits.

2. You’re worn out
If you are tired of your two hour commute to work each day, taking orders from your boss and constantly being on the go, it may be time for you to retire. “When was the last time you felt filled to overflowing, ¬ refreshed, recharged and ready for a new adventure? If you're too fried to care, it's time to fill up your tank and drive out of town,” says certified retirement coach, Lin Schreiber.
3. You’re financially stable
Have you made ample investments and saved money for your retirement years without even thinking about it? If you have been doing this for some time without realising, perhaps you were subconsciously telling yourself that it’s time to move on. If you no longer have to work to support yourself or your family and can retire, then why not do it?
4. Your health isn’t great
“If your health is beginning to fail and it is becoming more and more difficult for you to navigate, or if you’ve had serious ongoing health problems, such as diabetes, it might be time to call it quits at work,” says expert online guru Emma Salkill. “Likewise, if your spouse’s health has gone downhill, you might need to make a decision to retire, if only to help your loved one,” she adds.
5. You’re not afraid
If the thought of not working doesn’t scare you and you don’t think you will miss the security it once gave you, then this is a clear indication that you are ready to retire.
